To find answer to this question, the INSEAD Abu Dhabi Socio-Economic Research Team organized an exclusive panel discussion on “Building the Ecosystem of Private Equity in the Middle East” on the 28th of February at the INSEAD Abu Dhabi Campus. Professor Stephen J. Mezias from INSEAD set the stage by presenting the latest findings of his research on Private Equity ecosystem in the MENA region and Turkey. Key findings of this research were then discussed together with Carlos Heneine, co-head of Quilvest Private Equity, Dirk S. Stevens, Regional Sales Manager of Advent Software and Professor Stephen J. Mezias from INSEAD, offering insights to the following questions: What are the major obstacles for successful exits or growing portfolio companies in the Middle East and how can these obstacles be overcome? How does the social unrest in the Middle East continue to affect earnings and valuations of portfolio firms as well as the ability to invest in new firms? What are the major issues related to the alignment of interests and transparency? And finally, what are major trends for family firms in the region and how will these trends affect PE investments?
